| COOLANGATTA
is Queensland's most southerly coastal town and is the
southern gateway to the Gold Coast with famous surf
breaks at Snapper Rocks and Duranbah Beach within walking
distance of Griffith St, which is the main street of
Coolangatta. Located on the border alongside Tweed Heads
Coolangatta is the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing
holiday with the hustle and bustle of Surfers Paradise
just 35 minutes away and Brisbane 100km on the motorway.
The town is named after the schooner Coolangatta which
was wrecked here in 1846 and nearby Rainbow Beach bears
the name of the frigate Rainbow which explored the nearby
Tweed River in 1828. The 1875 population of Coolangatta
was 14, a little less than today!
Drive south to Tropical
Fruit World, then continue up to Uki or lunch at
the Tumbulgum Pub on the Tweed River banks just out
of Murwillumbah. Apartment accommodation is available
on or close to the beaches and new developments are
under way at nearby Kirra Beach.
Elephant Rock, Flat Rock and Currumbin Rock stand
sentry duty over magnificent Currumbin Beach. Watch
young surfers bouncing about in the backwash beneath
your lunch table at the Currumbin
Vikings Surf Club which was established in 1919.
Over 100 years ago coaches travelled along the beach
from Southport to Coolangatta using tidal crossings
at picturesque Tallebudgera (originally Tallabuggera)
and Currumbin Creeks. Walk the beach or take the inspirational
Oceanway walk to Tugun. Use Currumbin as a base to explore
and make sure you take in the world famous Currumbin
Wildlife Sanctuary. |
